CHAPTER 6

Jake

“Hey, sis! Are you in the back painting?”

“Yeah!”

As I walk to the back of my twin’s new house, I see why she picked this house. The natural lighting is amazing. The previous owner added a wing and built a modern sunroom. I give my sis a kiss on the cheek, “Hey. What are you painting?”

“It’s still coming together. I’m trying to recreate the waterfall that I saw while hiking last summer. The waterfall spilled into a tucked-away lagoon. The coolest part, you had to hike through a dense rainforest to get there. I plan to go back next summer.”

My sister has just finished talking when she punched me in the arm. “What did I do?”

“First of all, I’m mad at you for not telling me and secondly, I’m happy for you.”

“You realize that wasn’t grammatically correct, don’t you?”

“Stop trying to distract me, Jake. Now, tell me about her.”

I rub the back of my neck then ask my sister, “What tipped you off?”

“You’re my twin. It’s our superpower. Did you really think that I wouldn’t notice that you’re working more and more from the Austin office or that you’re gone most weekends?”

“J, I’ve been so focused on not scaring her off...” I pause as I’m trying to gather my thoughts.

“Oh. My. God. She’s the one, isn’t she? Like THE ONE. Am I right?”

“Yes, and I knew it right away.” Once I started talking, I couldn’t stop. “I met her on the cruise, and we hit it off right away. It’s like the stars aligned. Her friend met a guy while they were waiting to checking in, which left Gabi, I didn’t tell you her name, her name is Gabrielle St. Claire. I’ve met no one like her. She’s super smart but doesn’t need to make sure that everyone in the room knows. You and I work with people who find a way to weave into every conversation that they graduated from a prestigious college–not Gabi, even though she graduated from Harvard for both her undergrad and master’s degrees. It took me awhile to get this information from her. She majored and minored for her undergrad, then double majored for her master’s degrees. She’s very down to earth. You’re going to love her as much as I do.”

“I’m so thrilled for you, especially after that train wreck that you barely avoided with Shelly. I’m still baffled why the hell you thought you owed that wretched woman anything.”

“She wasn’t wretched, just... maybe a little closed off.”

“Enough about Shelly. When do I get to meet Gabi?”

“Tomorrow. Are you free? She’s in town attending a charity gala that her mom chairs.”
